Information for parents, carers, guardians and other trusted adults
Your child or a child you care for or support has been invited to apply to take part in a creative digital workshop to design a charity website for care-experienced young people. The workshop will be run by the charity, Become, and specialist creative agency Effervescent.
Why web design?
Become is the national charity for children in care and care leavers and our website is where we tell the world about what we do. It is also where young people in care and care leavers turn to when they need help. We’re looking for young people aged 13 to 26 to volunteer to work with professional creative specialists and to build a website for care-experienced young people, by care-experienced young people. The young people involved will help to create an exciting and welcoming website that helps our charity to reach more children in care and care leavers who need support.
What will the workshops involve?
We’re looking for young people aged 13 to 26 to work with professional creative specialists to design an awesome website that will help young people just like them to access support and build connections. Young people will play games, learn about web design, and develop Become’s new website which will support care-experienced young people across the country.
What will they get out of it?
Hopefully, lots! They will meet new people, build their confidence and learn new skills that we hope will help them in their future careers. Our process will be demanding but also playful and fun. Once work is complete, they will have helped create a professionally produced website that is welcoming, supportive and inspiring.
Quote from a parent/guardian last year
“Taking part has really improved E's confidence to work with others. It has given her lots of new ideas about how to work with others in the future."
Where and when?
From 10am to 3.30pm, Monday 23rd to Friday 27th August 2021 via Zoom, with more details to follow. Young people will need to attend every day.
Will they be expected take part in filming or other media?
Not unless they want to. We will use the workshop in August to design the website together. Later in the year, we may shoot some photography or film footage for the new website, but they do not have to participate if they do not want.
Who are we?
Become is the national charity for children in care and young care leavers. Since 1992, we’ve been working to make a difference to individual lives right now, and the care system as a while for future generations.
Effervescent is an award-winning charity established in 2004. Effervescent work with small groups of children and young people through group processes to create professional art works and campaigns about social issues.
How your child or a child you care for or support can get involved
The young person will need to fill out an online application here: https://forms.gle/EPJ9LrnaqGfuhaVy7, naming an adult (teacher/youth worker) who can tell us more about them. The deadline is Tuesday 10th August. After that, a referral form and permission paperwork will be sent in the post to the named, trusted adult to fill in and send back to us before Tuesday 17th August. If your child is successful in getting offered a place, we will notify them and you by Tuesday 17th August.
- Young people who take part will be paid London Living Wage (£10.85) or equivalent for the hours they take part. For those under 16, we’ll have a discussion with you about how best to compensate them for their time.
- All our activities are thoroughly risk assessed.
- All our team members hold enhanced DBS checks.
- We have all appropriate insurances and safety checks.
What do I need to do?
In the first instance, please ask one or two young people you know to apply to take part by completing our online application form here: https://forms.gle/EPJ9LrnaqGfuhaVy7. Here, they will name an adult they trust to tell us more about them (this might be their carer, teacher, key worker, social worker or personal advisor, etc). The deadline is Tuesday 10th August.
We will send the named, trusted adult a referral form, which needs to be sent back to us before Tuesday 17th August. If you are filling in the form, depending on your responses, we may need to speak with you in more detail or for clarification. For instance, if there is an issue around self-harming, or physical health issues, we might need more information to ensure we can keep the young person safe, and their needs met in an appropriate way.
We are, of course, ready to discuss details so please do get in touch with Milly, our Digital Communications Officer, by email (email@example.com) or phone (07951155397) if you have any questions.
