Systemic change can often feel slow, disheartening and unfair at times – especially during the pandemic. Since joining Become as the new Participation Officer, I have been privileged to be surrounded by change-makers who are fighting for young people in care and care leavers. On my first day, I felt so empowered by listening to the voices of young people speak at our APPPG group. It was great to hear the agency they had over their stories which were directed at people in positions of power.

In the short time I have been at Become, I have noticed a sense of family support in the team and how driven we all are for the care-experienced community. There is a shared determination for systemic changes to be made in the care system and that fuels me every day.

As a care-experienced black woman, spaces can feel alienating and hard to speak up at times but here I feel at home! It is so important for young people in care and care leavers to see representation and I am glad I am able to play that role. I can’t wait to continue meeting amazing young people who are overcoming adversity and harnessing their power to create long-lasting change within themselves and their communities. It’s great to be part of a charity that genuinely invests in the care community.

I want to listen, learn and amplify the voices of young people as each experience of care is different for each individual. In my role, I would like to challenge myself and our organisation to think broadly about co-design and co-production at all levels. I’m so lucky to be part of an organisation that I once benefited from at the age of 14 hoping I could be part of the next generation of care leaders.

I am excited to see how much impact we can have as an organisation on the lives of young people in care and care leavers. I look forward to working alongside young people and shaping the future of the care system.
